Quick answer

The Torrex takes Hoyt's tank-grade build quality and proven cam design and sells it for hundreds less than the flagships. It gives up a little speed and a little weight — and nothing else.

Hoyt’s reputation was built on risers that outlive their owners. The Torrex is the cheapest ticket into that reputation — so we tested whether the corners they cut are ones you would miss.

Performance Testing

At 70/29 our 420-grain arrow clocked 287 fps. More interesting was the noise floor: in our barn test the Torrex metered within 2 dB of a flagship costing $700 more. The draw cycle stacks slightly before the valley but holds like a vise.

Real-World Use

This is the bow we recommend to friends who hunt hard but won’t tinker. Ours went through an elk season including one genuinely stupid scree-field drop — a scuffed limb pocket was the only evidence.

Alternatives Worth Considering

  • Mathews Lift 29.5 — the flagship step up
  • Diamond Infinite 305 — far more adjustable, less refined
  • Bear Cruzer G3 — half the price for new shooters

Final Verdict

Best-value serious hunting bow we tested this year. Buy it, have a shop set it up properly, and forget bows exist for the next decade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hoyt Torrex good for beginners?

It suits committed beginners with settled draw specs — it is less adjustable than budget bows but far better built. Casual starters are better served by an adjustable package bow.

How fast is the Hoyt Torrex really?

Expect 280–290 fps with a real hunting arrow at 70 lbs — IBO numbers always exceed field setups.
